Stewardship Letter
Our Commitments: Prayers, Presence, Gifts, Service, and Witness

Dear Duke Memorial Family,
I am Thomas Phillips, the 2024 Stewardship Chair, and my favorite time of year is right now: lovely weather, fall colors, and football. It’s also the best time of year to reflect and look ahead, gathering the harvest and preparing for the long nights of winter when our provisions will keep us warm and nourished. Here at Duke Memorial, we do just that in our annual season of pledging for the coming year, a time when we take stock of where we are financially and lean into God’s blessings.
I am thrilled to invite you to join this year’s Stewardship Campaign called
“Who is my neighbor?”
Jesus is asked this question, after stating that the greatest commands are to love the Lord, your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself. We hear the story of the Good Samaritan in response to the question “Who is my neighbor?”, and we reflect on who we are, who our neighbors are, and whether we are good neighbors.
Our pledge to Duke Memorial does more than keep the lights on inside the building—it keeps the light
shining on us through weekly study and small groups. It enables the work of our non-profit siblings downstairs
to welcome refugee families, to aid those overcoming addiction, and to teach the next generation.
We have set a goal to raise $650,000 in pledges from the congregation.
Can you make a pledge to help us meet our goal?
Yes, this is ambitious. And, yes, this will keep Duke Memorial on track to where we want to be. And, yes, this will make a
difference in our lives and in that of our neighbors.
“Who is my neighbor?” is not a campaign about scarcity—it’s about abundance. It’s about leaning into living without
fear, knowing that our God will provide. It’s also an opportunity for us to help the Finance Committee discern where we
are and where we might be in 2024, allowing us to be good stewards of God’s blessings, even in the face of financial
constraints and budget deficits.
Beginning Sunday, October 22, we invite you to make your pledge electronically at the link below and to fill out a
"prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness" card as we pledge to give back to God from all areas and strengths of our lives.
As you’re able, please complete an electronic pledge card for your planned 2024 giving via this link.
Who is my neighbor? I was once your neighbor—until you invited me in. Join me in this beautiful season of abundance
as we lean into God’s mercy and grace, not hiding our talents but generously sharing them.
Peace and blessings,
Thomas N. Phillips II
