I am excited about being at Duke Memorial and look forward to many years of ministry with youth and parents of youth. I believe that Youth Ministry is more than just youth. It is the entire family and church working together to expose youth to Jesus Christ and to prepare them to live out their faith in their everyday lives.
Join us for the fun!

I implement programs of caring, not only to members of the congregation, but also to all who seek wholeness in their lives. Community support is received through:
- Stephen Ministry
- Parents Morning Out
- Singles Ministry
- Primetimers (Older Adult Ministry)
- DivorceCare Class
- Visitation of Home Bound Members
- Study Groups
Because my work provides a variety of opportunities for me to serve people of all ages, my work at Duke Memorial is wonderful.
Family Life: I was recently married to a fine Christian man, Jerry R. Smith. Together we have 5 grown children, 6 grandchildren, and lots of fun!

The Music Ministry at Duke Memorial plays a vital role in the life of the church. I'm honored to be a part of a church family who supports and gets involved in making music together. I believe that every person should have the opportunity to experience the joy of making music, from newborns on up. At Duke Memorial one can easily become involved in a vocal or instrumental group and know that their talents are needed and appreciated. I encourage you to find a place to plug in.
As Minister of Music, I oversee the many musical offerings at DMUMC:
- Sanctuary Choir (college & up)
- Instrument Ensemble (youth and adults)
- Wesley Singers (grades 1-5)
- Wesley Chimers (grades 1-5)
- Carol Choir (3, 4, and 5 year olds)
- Kindermusik with Jill (newborns to age 7)
- Bethany Bells
- Liturgical Dance Groups
As Minister of Children, I work alongside the Children’s Ministries and Children’s Education Committees planning age appropriate activities, educational programming and support to families of young children.
What a joy it is to be serving here among the fine folks of Duke Memorial!
On a personal note: I am married to Frank Newsome, our Minister of Youth and Discipleship, and my true partner and friend in ministry. We have three children: Brooke, a junior at Appalachian State; Page, a senior at Jordan High School and a 'mean' baritone player, and Amie, a fourth grader at Hope Valley Elementary, who wants to be the next American Idol. Oh, and we have a sweet, goofy golden retriever named Meg., As a family, we like playing tennis, camping in the mountains and chillin' at the beach.
Fred Mason, Jr.
Organist
It is my privilege to play the 52 rank Holtkamp organ to the Glory and Honor of Almighty God. I make every effort to play a wide variety of organ music from the standard repertoire to contemporary organ music. On a personal note: I am married to Helen Virginia Willoughby Mason and we are the parents of two adult children, Nicole Dorian Mason and Fred Mason III.
