Society of Saint Andrew
The Society of St. Andrew, an ecumenical ministry with non-profit status,
is dedicated to the mission of providing hunger-relief through gleaning,
the salvaging of surplus produce from farms and packinghouses.
When addressing the supplemental food needs of families it is easy to fall into the mind set that any food is good enough. The Society of St. Andrew–North Carolina is part of a national organization committed not only to addressing the need for supplemental food in households, but also to assuring that food is nutritious.
Gleaning of fresh produce allows for the most nutritious food to reach those in
need. Because of the efforts of the North Carolina Gleaning Network of
Society of St. Andrew, more than fifty-five varieties of fruits and vegetables
reach North Carolinians in need. The cost of putting this nutritious produce
on tables is about two cents per serving and waste is prevented.
Society of St. Andrew–North Carolina has a group of more than 600 devoted farmers who are willing to donate surplus produce through both field and packinghouse gleaning. Society of St. Andrew–North Carolina has more than 10,000 volunteers who donated more than 21,000 volunteer hours which keeps program costs to a minimum. Because of the willingness of farmers, volunteers, financial donors and receiving agencies, people needing supplemental food in North Carolina can find the healthiest food available.
