New Initiatives Fund

The New Initiatives Fund, one of the various legacy and endowment funds of Duke Memorial United Methodist Church, was created by Barbara and Bill Self, long time members of the church, serving in many roles. Bill, a CPA served as church Treasurer for seventeen years and has chaired the Administrative Board, Trustees, and the Finance Committee and currently serves as Legacy Leader. Barbara has served in the Altar Guild, helped in youth ministries, and led in the planning and implementation of policies for the columbarium. Both have taught Sunday School classes.

Recognizing that funds for new programs and activities needed for the attraction of new members are seldom included in the annual budget, the Self’s created an endowment with the annual proceeds to be available for projects and programs aimed at increasing membership, participation, and enthusiasm. It is anticipated that approval for expenditures will be a part of and based on the approval of the programs through the ministers and Church Council. The funds are commingled with other legacy funds for investment purposes and are administered by the Legacy Investment Funds Committee.

Church Family Retreat a Success

Our sincere thanks and appreciation go to Frank and Jill Newsome for organizing and leading the church family retreat in the NC Mountains the weekend of October 16th. The theme was “Climbing Companions” based on Matthew 5:1-9. It was a relaxing and unique opportunity for a group of 40+ members to get to know one another outside the familiarity of church. Participants ranged from 8 months to 80+ years. One attending family spanned four generations. We dined together, worshiped, played games, forged new connections and strengthened the ties that bind us together. Some of the highlights include the fireside reading club, playing noodle tag with Ms. Coach B, the pumpkin carving contest (featuring the serious and extreme talents of Chris Fortner), the Pictionary competition and Warren Smith’s mad dash to the finish line, Frank’s interpretive dance in the talent show, the musical quartet of Jill, Jack Carroll, Fuller and Erika Sasser, and marveling in God’s splendor of the mountains and colorful trees.
